Mitzvah Extravaganza at JCC Mega Sites on December 25th

The epicenters of Mitzvah Day activities are located at both the Weinberg Park Heights and Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCCs where hundreds of volunteers assemble 2,000 Winter Care Packages and participate in dozens of other hands-on volunteer projects in the ever-expanding Mitzvah Room.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to both JCCs.

Mitzvah Day at Weinberg Park Heights JCC
9:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Weinberg Park Heights JCC, 5700 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore 21215
Join us at Park Heights for our signature project assembling 1,500 Winter Care Packages, as well as a large Mitzvah Room with dozens of service projects like making fleece blankets, decorating cards, and assembling PB&J sandwiches to people experiencing homelessness. Open to all ages!

Mitzvah Day at Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC
12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Owings Mills JCC, 3506 Gwynnbrook Avenue, Owings Mills 21117
The Owings Mills JCC will also have mitzvah projects that appeal to all ages! Make animal toys. Hand warmers, and pack PJs for those in need. Open to all ages!

Delivery Drivers for Both JCCs
Shifts between 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Drivers are needed to deliver the assembled Winter Care Packages from one of the JCCs to various service sites throughout Baltimore and the surrounding area.  Drivers will meet at the JCC and be given their assignments.  Mini vans or SUVs preferred!

 

Volunteer Throughout the Community

Join with other impassioned and committed volunteers at sites throughout Baltimore on both December 24 and December 25 to meet vital community needs.  Projects include assisting in shelters, soup kitchens, and senior facilities, allowing volunteers the opportunity to help the homeless, sick, needy and isolated in Baltimore.

**Project leaders are needed for some of our projects.  The project leader is responsible for acting as the liaison between the service site and the volunteers.  Project leaders will be provided with a job description and resources.  If you are interested in being a project leader, please indicate so on your registration form.

The Baltimore Station PROJECT FULL

Volunteers provide, prepare, and serve a Christmas Eve lunch and socialize with the men of The Baltimore Station – a residential facility for men in recovery.  Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate in this project. *JVC has a limited number of gift cards to assist with food purchases and/or pre-prepared casseroles that can be used. Volunteers should expect to incur some cost for this project.

Sarah’s Hope at Hannah More PROJECT FULL

Repair the World – Operation Shoebox (Packing)

Moishe House Baltimore (Canton Neighborhood)
Calling young adults! Repair the World Baltimore, in partnership with Moishe House and IMPACT, will be hosting Operation Shoebox on Sunday evening. Volunteers will be packing shoeboxes with socks, snacks, gloves, and other items and wrapping them as gifts to distribute to people experiencing homelessness.

Bring your families and your Bingo skills to Levindale for a morning of fun with the residents.   Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate in this exciting program. Volunteers have been asked to bring small wrapped toiletry gifts as bingo prizes.

Playdate Together at Atrium Village PROJECT FULL

Geared toward families with young children (3 months- preschool), PlayDate Together is a multi-generational interactive program that brightens senior citizens’ days through sing-alongs, books, and more at Atrium Village.

Volunteers will prepare and facilitate activities for residents and families at the Joseph Richey Hospice Center in Baltimore City. Examples include providing cookies to decorate, help play a game, and generally add cheer for the families and patients. A Project leader is needed for this project.

Holiday Fun with Springwell Senior Living

Springwell will supply cookies and volunteers will bring the cheer! Volunteer should expect to bring a game (bingo, etc) to play with the residents while they enjoy cookies. JVC has games that can be borrowed, or feel free to be creative!

Help the Homeless and the Hungry

Repair the World – Operation Shoebox (Distribution)

Calling young adults! Volunteers will meet at the JMM parking to team up and distribute shoeboxes filled with care items to Baltimoreans experiencing homelessness.

Breakfast Meal Service

Volunteers are needed to help serve breakfast for the clients of Weinberg Housing and Resource Center.  WHRC is an emergency shelter that provides homeless services to over 275 men and women each night in the city of Baltimore.

My Sister’s Place

Volunteers are needed to provide, prepare and serve a meal for the clients of My Sister’s Place.  My Sister’s place provides daily meals and access to services such as case management, education and job training to women in Baltimore City. A Project Leader is needed to organize the meal and the volunteers. *JVC has a limited number of gift cards to assist with food purchases and/or pre-prepared casseroles that can be used. Volunteers should expect to incur some cost for this project.

Living Classrooms’ Game Changers Initiative

The Game Changers Initiative is a program focused on health and wellness. The idea is to provide programming to students when Baltimore City Schools are closed to holidays. Volunteers can expect to act as a camp counselor, supervise and support different activities such as sports, games, crafts and more!

Closed Projects in the Community

Shomrei Emunah/Jewish Caring Network Challah Bake! Challahs made will be delivered to families in our community who have a family member with a life-threatening or serious illness. 6th – 8th grade girls from Shomrei Emunah will be making the chllahs that will bring joy into lives.

 Knit Your Bit

We need to stock up on hand-knit scarves and hats for next Mitzvah Day. Get crafty!!  Stitch away… on the go…at meetings…at lunches…while watching the football on TV…in carpool line! Whenever you have the time, knit or crochet away to produce winter hats and scarves to be included in Winter Care Packages which will be assembled on Mitzvah Day.

All scarves and hats should be returned to Jewish Volunteer Connection at 5708 Park Heights Avenue by December 2017.
