JVC’s Hurricane Relief Mission

*** JVC’s December Hurricane Relief Mission is currently full. Please email amalis@associated.org to be added to a list of volunteers to notify about last minute openings or future volunteer missions!***

Looking for a way to help people devastated by the hurricanes? Register for JVC’s Hurricane Relief Mission to Houston! JVC Volunteers will join NECHAMA, a Jewish volunteer organization that provides natural disaster preparedness, response, and recovery services nationwide, to assist their response efforts in Houston.

In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, devastating large sections of the Texas coast and inland where rainfall totals reached 40+ inches of rain. The Associated has raised significant relief funds and JVC volunteers made additional contributions with gift cards and other donations to help recent hurricane victims.

This mission will be generously subsidized by Jewish Volunteer Connection (JVC) and The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.

Work: We will be mucking, gutting and cleaning homes damaged by the hurricane. Roll up your sleeves and expect to get dirty while helping homeowners recover from the loss of possessions and their home.

Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. Anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Cost: Participants are responsible for the cost and arrangement of flights as well as any plans alternative to what JVC is providing.

  • Flights: JVC can recommend flights if requested.

    • Flights are to be arranged and paid for by volunteer participants.

    • Monday, December 4th – JVC strongly recommends volunteers arrive in Houston by 4:30pm to use the provided group transportation.

    • Thursday, December 7th – We recommend departing no earlier than 2:30pm since we will volunteer in the morning.

  • Ground Transportation will be provided:

    • To and From Houston’s Hobby Airport: In order to use the provided group transportation, volunteer participants need to arrive in Houston (Hobby Airport) by 4:30pm on Monday, December 4 and depart from Houston no earlier than 2:30pm on Thursday December 7.

    • Volunteer participants are responsible for the cost and arrangement of all alternative transportation needs.

  • Hotel rooms will be provided with double occupancy (two volunteers per room).

    • If a volunteer participant wants alternative lodging, it is their responsibility and cost.

  • All provided food will be kosher.

  • Breakfast will be provided by the hotel.

  • Lunch will be at the worksite and provided. Volunteers may need to assist in packing lunches.

  • Two out of three dinners will be provided. One dinner will be at the cost of participants and give the opportunity to tour the area and contribute towards the economy that has been affected by the storm’s destruction.

Space is Limited. Volunteers will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.

*After receiving confirmation from JVC staff that your spot is reserved, we’ll ask volunteer participants to book flights by November 16, 2017 and send flight information to JVC.
