Mitzvah Day

Tuesday, December 24th and Wednesday, December 25th 2019

Join more than a thousand other volunteers and make a huge impact in one day! There are volunteer opportunities for every age, interest, and ability. Jewish Volunteer Connection is proud to present our Mitzvah Day 2019.

JCC Mega Sites on December 25th

The epicenters of Mitzvah Day activities are located at both the Weinberg Park Heights and Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCCs where hundreds of volunteers assemble over 2,000 Winter Care Packages and participate in dozens of other hands-on volunteer projects in the ever-expanding Mitzvah Room.

Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome to both JCCs.

Mitzvah Day at Weinberg Park Heights JCC
9:00 – 11:00 a.m. (December 25th)
Weinberg Park Heights JCC, 5700 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore 21215
Join us at Park Heights for our signature project assembling 1,500 Winter Care Packages, as well as a large Mitzvah Room with dozens of service projects like making snack mixes and sandwiches for people in need. Program is open to people of all ages and abilities. A sensory friendly room will be available.

Mitzvah Day at Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC
12:30 – 2:30 p.m. (December 25th)
Owings Mills JCC, 3506 Gwynnbrook Avenue, Owings Mills 21117
The Owings Mills JCC will also have mitzvah projects that appeal to all ages! Make fleece blankets, assemble winter care packages, and much more. Program is open to people of all ages and abilities. A sensory friendly room will be available.

Delivery Drivers for Both JCCs
Shifts between 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (December 25th)
Drivers are needed to deliver the assembled Winter Care Packages from one of the JCCs to various service sites throughout Baltimore and the surrounding area.  Drivers will meet at the JCC and be given their assignments.  Mini vans or SUVs preferred!


Volunteer Throughout the Community

Join other impassioned and committed volunteers at sites throughout Baltimore on both December 24 and December 25 to meet vital community needs.  Projects include assisting in shelters, soup kitchens, and senior facilities, allowing volunteers the opportunity to help the homeless, sick, needy and isolated in Baltimore.

Sign Up Early, Availability is Limited
**Project leaders are needed for some of our projects.  The project leader is responsible for acting as the liaison between the service site and the volunteers.  Project leaders will be provided with a job description and resources.  If you are interested in being a project leader, please indicate so on your registration form.

Opportunities on December 24th

Deliver Presents for Santa’s Helpers Anonymous
8:30 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. (December 24th)

Santa’s Helpers Anonymous is looking for some extra sleighs to make deliveries to 1,000 families. You will have help loading your car with food and gifts for 3-4 families; each driver should have one to two helpers in their cars. Plan to have access to a GPS or smartphone, addressed and instructions for deliveries will be provided.
Volunteers will be assigned to one of 4 shifts beginning at 8:30 a.m.  The last shift begins at 10:30 a.m.  Shifts should not take more than two hours.  Volunteers will be assigned their shift (requests are very difficult to impossible to orchestrate with 275 drivers).
Volunteer Restrictions: Volunteers under 16 must have parental supervision.


Serve Lunch at The Baltimore Station

Volunteers provide, prepare, and serve a Christmas Eve lunch and socialize with the men of The Baltimore Station, an innovative therapeutic residential treatment program supporting veterans and others who are transitioning through the cycle of poverty, addiction, and homelessness to self-sufficiency.
Volunteers will be asked to contribute a part of a meal to serve to The Baltimore Station’s clients.
Volunteer Restrictions: Volunteers must be 10+ (with parental supervision)


Holiday Party at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital
1:30 – 3:30 p.m.(December 24th)

Volunteers will help bring residents down to the party and back, serve food, and socialize with Levindale’s residents.
Volunteer Restrictions: No age restrictions with parent


Pack Diapers at ShareBaby
1:00 – 3:00 p.m.(December 24th)

Volunteers will join ShareBaby at their warehouse to help wrap diapers and sort gear! Volunteering with ShareBaby is a great way to spend some time giving back to children in need in Baltimore.

Serve Dinner at Sarah’s Hope at Hannah More

Volunteers will provide, prepare, and serve Christmas Eve dinner to the residents of Sarah’s Hope at Hannah More located in Reisterstown.  Volunteers will be asked to contribute a part of a meal to serve to Hannah More clients.

Serve Dinner at The Helping Up Mission
5:00 – 6:30 p.m.(December 24th)

Volunteers are needed to help Serve a meal for the clients of The Helping Up Mission.  The Helping Up Mission is both a long-term residential recovery program and an overnight shelter for men in need.
Volunteer Restrictions: Volunteers must be 13+, with a parent if under 18

Bring your families and your Bingo skills to Levindale for a morning of fun with the residents.   Volunteers of all ages are welcome and encouraged to bring prizes for the residents!

PlayDate Together at Springwell Senior Living
10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. (December 25th)

Geared toward families with young children (3 months- preschool), PlayDate Together is a multi-generational interactive program that brightens senior citizens’ days through sing-alongs, books, and more at Springwell Senior Living.
Volunteer Restrictions: Volunteers should have a child between 3 months – preschool


Playdate Together at Atrium Village
10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. (December 25th)

Geared toward families with young children (3 months- elementary school), PlayDate Together is a multi-generational interactive program that brightens senior citizens’ days through sing-alongs, books, and more at Atrium Village. Volunteers will be working with seniors at the Atrium Village to make/assembly personal care bags for people experiencing homelessness.
Volunteer Restrictions: Volunteers should have a child between 3 months – Elementary School


Weinberg Park Assisted Living –Serve Lunch

Joseph Richey Hospice Center – Holiday Activities
1:00 – 3:00 p.m. (December 25th)

Volunteers will prepare and facilitate activities for residents and families at the Joseph Richey Hospice Center in Baltimore City. Examples include providing cookies to decorate, help play a game, and generally add cheer for the families and patients.
Volunteer Restrictions:  No age restriction with an adult


Spa Day with Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital Residents!
1:30 – 3:30 p.m. (December 25th)

Volunteers will give residents basic manicures (removing polish, filling nails if needed, and repolishing nails), gentle hand massages with lotion, etc. Volunteers will be asked to bring in some supplies to donate (nail polish, etc).

Activity Hour at Ronald McDonald House

Are you good at crafts or love game night? Think of the kind of things you, your family, and friends like to do together in your spare time and come share with our guest families. Volunteers will help lead an activity hour for the families staying at Ronald McDonald House.
Volunteer Restrictions: none with appropriate adult supervision


Help the Homeless and the Hungry

Breakfast Meal Service:

Serve Breakfast at My Sister’s Place

Volunteers are needed to provide, prepare and serve a meal for the clients of My Sister’s Place.  My Sister’s place provides daily meals and access to services such as case management, education and job training to women in Baltimore City. Volunteers will be asked to contribute a part of a meal to serve to My Sister’s Place clients.
Volunteer Restrictions: Volunteers must be 14+


Serve Breakfast at Charm City Care Connection
7:30 – 11:00 a.m. (December 25th)

Volunteers are needed to Provide, prepare, and serve a meal for the clients of Charm City Care connection. They connect those in the most marginalized communities in Baltimore city with high-quality healthcare, services, and meals. Volunteers will be asked to contribute a part of a meal to serve to the clients.
Volunteer Restrictions: Volunteers can be 6+, with a parent.

Volunteers are needed to serve a lunch for the clients of Beans and Bread, a homeless day resource program that serves 300 people daily.

Volunteers are needed to help serve dinner for the clients of Weinberg Housing and Resource Center.  WHRC is an emergency shelter that provides homeless services to over 275 men and women each night in the city of Baltimore.

Mitzvah Day at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation

For the seventh year in a row, JMM is pleased to partner with JVC to participate in Mitzvah Day. This year we will be taking inspiration from our exhibit Scrap Yard: Innovators of Recycling by creating donations out of recycled materials. Activities are suitable for all ages and no artistic talent is required.

JVC will have several volunteer projects for all ages.
